Dealing with Finnish Winters

Post by Fain » Thu Nov 29, 2007 4:01 pm

I was wondering if anyone had advise for dealing with the finnish winter.
I am not so concerned about the cold, I like it in fact, long as there is snow, the rain becomes annoying after awhile, but that goes for anywhere in the world for me.

My question is more about dealing with the lack of light and the depression and lack of energy that seems to follow it.

I take a multi-vitamin every morning, and try to drink milk where I can, but that is about all I know about dealing with it.
I also try to excercise and take walks when the wind isn't too bad or there isn't räntä falling from the sky.

However, any other advice for dealing with it a little better would be good.
I have noticed despite doing what I have already stated I often find it hard to remove myself from the bed in the morning, and I have nearly no energy in the mornings either.

This might just be the way things will be for me in the winter, and if so I will adjust, but anything that might help I am willing to try.

Get a bright light or natural alarm clock. Light therapy works wonders. There is a recent thread on that.

You don't need to deal with the Finnish winter - the Finnish winter deals with you, that is.

Spend your week thinking about the weekend drinking.

But on a serious note, the best cure is sauna.

Was thinking about that one.

And the comments about the sauna I hadn't heard before, didn't think it would help much with this but I wil try it.

People don't want to answer the same questions over and over again... that's why use the search. So get your lazy fingers to work with the search button.

Also with that snooty attitude, you're not gonna get many answers in the future, since there was an active thread about this like two weeks ago.

My advise...Join an AutoKoulu Like I have done now... ..I have to get up every alternate day at 6 am to get ready for driving classes which begin at 6:45....Difficult to get a day time during work hours...
After having already driven for 2 weeks in the mornings,my driving instructor told me that we could go for Dark Driving the moment i pass the driving test... And i am just wondering if it would get more darker than 6 in the mornings

The bloody sarcasme here should keep you warm....I never expect a straight answer from any of these bloody foreigners....or the locals :)

This is your life now....embrace it, but nice winter clothes so you like being outside.get interested in cold cllimate living, I love the fact that no amount of bad weather can stop Finland from carrying on as normal..it was -48C in Rovaniemi when I forst moved there...it was dangerousley cold for a week or som but somehow it was really special....even the car tyres froze, it was like driving on sqaure tyres :)....

Keep busey, enjoy the things that we have that other places dont....its exotic somehow....like your work, love your family...and get a sauna

good luck

steve
