We talk about very different people. I mind a unique person, such as Harvard, Standford grad or very experience guy, basically a star in his area. In IT, such person could be Msc or PhD in CS, with 7+ years in internationally recognized company (i.e. IBM) with senior level position. Perhaps, this is one out of 100. It is not a problem for him would be find a job in Finland. Finally, translator might be hired for that person,if it is strictly required.Tiwaz wrote: By and large, people like debo and shrec are doing huge disfavour to people wanting to move in.
btw, about niche job. There is no really such one. Any job has a specialization, sometimes it could wider or be more focused on some specifics.
And even then, I have my doubts about chances of being employed if big corporations are not interested at the time.
Because Harvard superman is not necessarily what mid to small companies want or need. Person you describe shrecher is expensive. In smaller circles perhaps too expensive compared to what he can offer to such smaller organisation.

I´ve been reading all this with interest, so when the tots go to school (or if we are almost bankrupt before) I could contemplate my career again!
I seem to be qualified & experienced in one of the best jobs ever, as language seems to be no barrier so far. People have already asked if I can teach them, in which ever language I prefer (English, Finglish or my sort-of Finnish
). Through word of mouth, living in a small village, & generally by choice of career, I already have a huge long waiting list of students, from schoolkids to pensioners!
My job:
Music teacher
Now, how many years must I wait till the tots get to school age?......
"Allie´s Nowheremäki Musikki Koulu" How does that sound?.... dream on!
(I am sure Hank will find a big pitfall for me, somewhere, though
)

Sorry, that last post sounded soooo arrogant, it wasn´t meant to be. I just wanted to mention that there are a FEW professions where you can get by almost immediately without the native language. (It didn´t take me long to notice though that flygel in Finnish is a grand piano & not a mellow sounding trumpet called a flugel.)
The one thing that really annoys me though is foreigners who think that they can survive in a foreign country without at least trying to learn the language. I know a Brit couple who retired to France & refused to speak french. I know a couple of brits in Finland who have married Finns & who REFUSE to learn Finnish because they speak English at work

I don't think many people will ever come here.interleukin wrote:btw, language is not barrier in Helsinki area, where most of people nicely speak English, but in other deep country regions it could big issue, thought.
christ! talk about living in a bubble!
Are you going to take care of and feed all the poor people who come here based on your delusions?
Such people who potentially could be hired in Finland have very good income at they current location. Not many people are ready to slash at least half of income to live and work in Finland. Averagely, salaries here are low and taxation is high.
The nature here is far from friendly as well: shallow and cold rain, dark.
Apparently this forum proves you wrong. There are many people coming to Finland.shrecher wrote:I don't think many people will ever come here.interleukin wrote:btw, language is not barrier in Helsinki area, where most of people nicely speak English, but in other deep country regions it could big issue, thought.

Alas, just about none of them are Harvard graduates of niche IT area with 7 year experience. Thus your advices are pretty much useless.
But your habit to try to present english as alternative to finnish when in Finland is very counterproductive. You reinforce illusion some people have and when they run into trouble with someone who either cannot speak english or refuses to speak english to them. Not to mention when they try to look for job after you told how easy it is without speaking finnish and face reality that 9 out of 10 places flat out do not want anyone who does not speak finnish and out of that 10% you are going to compete with finns who not only speak excellent english, they speak excellent finnish AND have other home advantages to boot (for one they have no problem having their studies accepted since they most likely graduated from finnish school and are very capable of acting along local cultural norms).

Migration is a game of opinions. IMHO the comments on this forum about working in Finland have been overall pretty accurate and fair.
Sorry, but yes it is compared to the UK for finding work.JaDLB wrote:come on get a grip on urself guys . finland is not that hard
No, have to disagree, not for many. For relatively few.JaDLB wrote:and for many it can be quiet lucky .
Congratulations. I have to as have many on this forum. It is all the people that either haven't stayed in Finland or couldn't stay in Finland that we are maybe not hearing from.JaDLB wrote:been here for a year and a have a damn good job !
I know some, but it is relatively few compared to the amount of immigrants I have met and the amount who have either had to leave or have not been able to gain positions that they might have expected.JaDLB wrote:and i know many that started from scratch and now they have a heck of a good positions or jobs.
That's right. Finland is great and nobody should be put off trying to come here. HOWEVER, many people come to this forum asking questions and sounding IMHO over-confident or even naive and need to be honestly warned - warned is not too strong a term to use when we are talking about people's lives and livelihoods - I wish I had been warned in advance:)JaDLB wrote:so please the one who are coming to this forum looking for a job i really advice u to start looking elsewhere , finland is a virgin market lots of potentials and ideas can be done here. its just complicated if you dont speak finnish but it shouldn.t stop anyone . it didn't stop me.
JaDLB wrote:and to all the negative people that are mocking the rest , please take a look at your dear finland . it's getting old , you need skilled immigrant to drive ur tram and clean ur roads in the snow . and clean ur beloved shops so you can go in the morning to shop and have ur coffee. try to be a bit more positive toward job seekers , there are many jobs here.
