Chronic toxicity of vitamin is characterised by the following symptoms: severe liver enlargement and damage, anemia, fetal abnormalities (pregnant women must be very careful), menstrual irregularities, extreme fatigue, liver damage, injury to brain and nervous system. Vitamin a is a fat soluble vitamin and is stored in the body, ie the excess is not excreted, it continues to build up. Personally and professionally, i feel that it is irresponsible for a company to supply a product at 300% of the recommended daily dosage. You should get professional advice with nutritional supplements, because you also need to calculate how much vitamin a you are getting your food too.

Maximum recommended dosage for vitamin a is 10,000IU. 300% of that is 3,000,000IU. Toxicity levels commence at 50,000IU. BE CAREFUL!!
you seem like an expert, especially since you categorize all the vitamins into a same group... which is incorrect. There's water soluble vitamins and oil soluble vitamins. C-vitamins are water soluble, so basically you can't OD on vitamin C, as long as you keep your body hydrated. This why people who think they a coming up with a cold, tend to take vitamin C many times over the RDA. B-vitamins are oil soluble, so those are the ones you can OD with.

btw, isn't 300% of 10.000 30.000 as it's 3 times the original amount? Wouldn't that then make the 300% dose safe according to you?

I didn't categorise all the vits into one group - as you can see above if you read more carefully,i said that vitamin a is a fat soluble vitamin.

There are water soluble vitamins (the 8 B vits and vit C) and fat soluble (A,D,E & K). Generally speaking, water soluble vitamins are readily excreted from the body when they are consumed in excess. But, according to the text books, you still need to be careful with niacin (B3) and pyrodixine - both b group vitamins - when it comes to toxicity levels.

And yes, it's true that 300% of 10,000 is 30,000 - whoops! In my haste to reply my brain was working on multiplication rather than percentage  . Still, one carrot has about 12,000IU of vit a, so if a person was taking a 30,000IU supplement and eating a healthy diet, it would be easy enough to get to toxic levels.

And no, not an expert yet, still studying.

well, now that I read it carefully, it seems to say as you say... however with the number of typos and grammar errors... it was easy to misinterpret your post...
Iseult - the reason you can't buy vitamin a in such strong potency
was read by my self correcting mind as "the reason you can't buy vitamin in a such strong potency" ... it would help to use capitals when describing the vitamins...

If you are studying medicine, I'd brush up on my math if I was you... as a patient I'd hate to get 300.000.000IU of something I would only need 30.000IU...

Yep, sorry about ALL those typos and grammatical errors. What a clutz!!

Re the maths - i'll be sure to focus when we get to dosages. Thanks for the tip.

As i mentioned, i'm a student and not treating anybody yet. Thank god my lecturers don't expect me to know everything straight away!!!! I'm studying nutrition (not medicine), and don't be afraid - I can't prescribe anything until I graduate.

You seem to be interested in nutrition - do you have a qualification?

Kupcake,
Perhaps I should have made it clearer that, since I was asking for tips on finding a specific (and hard to find) product, I am indeed aware of the possible risks of taking said product and have carefully considered them. As has already come up, I was referring to a product containing three times the recommended daily dosage, not three hundred times, and I'm sure such product would be not only illegal but also indigestible in size. :D Good luck with your studies, here's hoping you'll read your future patients'/clients' files more carefully than you did mine.
