World Championships in Canada

Post by Hank W. » Sat May 03, 2008 10:03 pm

*Finally* SPORT to discuss 8)

I'm sunburnt and tired as heck, so I think the Finland-Germany match will have to wait for the morning recaps. I'd loved to see how the Finnish team (un)performs. Germany is also interesting though nothing these days compared to what they were in the 80's.

The games so far have been "slaughters", the only titillating one has been Belarus-Sweden. Finland Germany *should* be a "slaughter" as well, but I have this "they'll be a clusterf* in the first game" scare gnawing... Finland-Norway on Tuesday is a slaughter or I'll eat a dried cod, first interesting one will be against Slovenia on Wednesday... Other games I'd say the Czechoslovakia-USSR, I mean Czech-Russia on Monday and Canada-USA on Wednesday should be interesting. Also its very nice scheduling the Finland games are 22.30... Italy-Denmark ought to be fun to see disney on ice too, but thats scheduled 2am and I'm not *that* much of a sports fan.

So, anyone else following the game? What teams will make a surprise? I haven't had a chance to see for example the Swiss or the French play... I was hoping Latvia was getting there...

Belarus is definitely up there on my "worry list" the way they are giving the Gladstone Ganders hard luck...

Cheers, Hank W.

if it were Slovenia, Hank, it would be a slaughter like the rest (except that the Lion Cubs are currently drawing with the Germans  ), but since it is SLOVAKIA (vive le difference, at least in hockey), it's pretty certain to be interesting.

Well, the game looked ok when Jokinen made it 2-0, but then - somehow unexperienced defense men have been in trouble with fysical and aggressive Germans. Let's hope obviously superior talent of the Finns really show's up in the third period.

Aahh, just in 24 seconds Mikko Koivu made his secong goal of the game - it's now 3-1. It'll go ok.

A real genius idea to hold this thing in North America at the same time as the NHL playoffs. Those empty seats make it look really riveting.

Yeah, "because it's in Canada, each game will be sold out and has amazing atmosphere" - didn't quite hold up in this game.

But Finland won, that's the main thing.

*darn* I was browsing the schedule to see the pairings...Slovenia-Latvia is there on the list... equal teams are fun to watch against each other, "slaughters" not so much... Best bang for the buck yesterday was Belarus-Sweden though.

What really is funny is that the center ice has a big Skoda badge and there are Skoda cars on display............They don't sell Skodas over there!

I'm all over it; well, to the extent that I can be with no f-n TV coverage here.

So is Saku going to join his brother Mikko (now that the Canadiens are knocked out of the NHL playoffs), or are the rosters now set for the rest of the tournament? Mikko and former Karpat goalie Nicklas Backstrom are the MN Wild reps that will help lead Suomi Lions to great things this year. Hyvaa Suomi! Hakaa paalle! (Something like that; how the heck do you spell it anyway?)

Now its getting interesting. Either the Belarusians partied too hard, Switzerland has a good team, or Sweden just sucks this year, but the score now looks like its even teams. Tomorrows Switzerland-Sweden seems to be worth watching. As is the Canada-USA game, a it seems both have so far slaughtered their opponents. Slovenia Latvia I might make a bet on Slovenia winning. The D-group seems to have offered its entertainment.

It's pain to watch - Finland Norway 2-2 after two periods. Along with -65 shirts they are playing at -65 level.

Should we have a whip-round? Cod is quite pricey these days. :P :P :P :P :P :P

Finland & Norway in OT? Oh my oh my. Well, they got the win and perhaps a wake-up call also.

I see that Saku will be joining the team for the next game.
