Time off work to look after kid if partner sick.

Post by irnbru » Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:21 pm

Is there any employment law regarding this. I.e. can you expect to have a paid day off if this situation occurs? My wife had to spend a day in hospital and as a consequence I had to take a day off to look after my kid but my work gave me an unpaid holiday. I'm just wondering if I could have had a paid day off.

Yes there is law: Työsopimuslaki, chapter 4, 8 §: The employer is not obliged to pay the employee wages for family leave time described in this chapter.

Thanks so I got an unpaid holiday and that was correct then. OK. But can they refuse to give you this time off? What if its many days or even weeks?

No offence to you personally irnbru, but I'm pleased to hear that extra paid leave isn't handed out to parents of sick children. Having seen the other side of the coin (people having to do unpaid overtime to cover the absent people), I think it's rather a good idea.

I think it is three days. After that you have to make some other arrangements.

Just for info...

A charity with an excellent reputation called the Mannerheim League, has trained babysitters to help in these kind of situations:

OK, so most parents would rather have root canal surgery than leave their kids with a stranger, but this charity does have a great reputation and sometimes in an emergency we just have to make choices we would otherwise rather not have to make.

but don't you get sick-pay from KELA?

In these situations nice companies give you your whole pay, but claim some back off KELA. Not so nice companies just let you get the KELA money.

Thats not what i'm asking here. I already get paid if I need to look after a sick child. No offence to you personally  but try reading my post first before spouting off.

Thanks for that. I hope its not something I need to use but it's good to know there is something like that there.
