Actually VR is already heavily subsidised by the Finnish taxpayer, but I guess you thought your ticket price actually covered the operating costs?

I see all YLE's media services as a necessity for the population. The government and the national broadcaster have a responsibility to educate the population. Pretty much in the same way that they have an obligation to build schools to educate kids, to build playgrounds to entertain children, neither of which are of direct use to me, but they indirectly benefit me in other ways, the government must build and maintain a road infrastructure, most of which many of us will never use, but we benefit perhaps because it is used to deliver our food, or to deliver paper to our offices, etc, etc, etc.
People need to look further than their own little selfish world.
Anyway, it's of course just another tax. Not such a bad one, as we know the money goes towards making a service available for everyone. This will benefit some directly, some indirectly, but one thing is sure, it will benefit society as a whole.
