Where to buy 12 cubic metres of topsoil

Post by Cod » Thu Jun 04, 2009 2:44 pm

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience buying around 12 cubic metres of topsoil which we will use to flatten a sloping lawn - considering also that we live in Kirkkonummi area. We can pick-up soil at 30 euro per 500kg locally (about half a cubic metre) but this is a bit unrealistic as it would take forever and comes to around 900 euro, so we would need it delivered in one go by dump truck - I guess.

Thanks muchly in advance

If you're planning on doing this by yourself (to save some money), then it will take forever anyway. If you have a professional landscape company do it, it will only take one day. (But it may not be exactly the way you wanted it.) Also, the landscape company can get the topsoil for your yard and have it deliverd too.(Their idea of what topsoil is and what you think it is may be completely different)
Good luck with this endeavor!

If you have a trailer (or can borrow one) you can pick up topsoil/ sand/ etc from Backas Puutarhakeskus (near Jumbo). I remember the price was quite cheap and you did not have to pay transport etc, but instead get your hands a little dirty loading the trailer etc. maybe you can phone them first and find out prices, I was comparing to delivered prices. I remember the price was per trailer, not by weight.

Aparently you can get soil from the sewage processing plants. Much cheaper than anywhere else...

that must be a rather large trailer to hold 12m3. Imagine 12 meters long, 12 meters wide and 12 meters high...

Rather 6m x 2m x 1m = 12m3...

I can personally vouch for kekkila, although they have quite a few grades of top soil, are you going to want to grow anything apart from a lawn on this area or will you be making flower beds as this plays a large part in choosing the type.

Sounds a bit scary that you are leveling a sloping lawn, how much of a incline is there? and what are you using to stop it sliding off?

Will be interesting to hear how this works out.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

..just need some supporting non-rotting timberwork at the 'toe' end along with some drainage to take away the buildup of water..where to drain the water too is a bit of an issue..will need some kind of a soak pit within our boundary.

..did the calcs on this, and loose top soil is not only twice the volume of compact topsoil but it's actually very heavy - over 1200kg per m3. Our large car can tow only 500kg GROSS, so thats around 400kg of soil, which is well under .5m3 - ie, not much.

Seems that the best way to shift alot of soil is by delivery in a dumptruck... ching ching (goes the cash register)

We had an offer...tax free  from a local geezer doing other local work for 300 euro for the lot. Sounds so good, but I'ld hedge that he'd do a crap job, not put down 12m3 and wouldn't come back to sort it when it all compacts to a roller coaster in a few winters from now..

Have you tried the Rautta keskus - Varuboden ?
Also check the local Kirkkonummen Sanomat. There's invariably an advert most of the times for the Multa.
Another place that I know of is close to Siuntio but then they are mostly for rocks/pebbles.
and then there's always:
