Plastic Cheese and Wooden shoes and liitle boys poking their fingers in to holes  = Holland.
Now if your were to get your teeth into a nice mature Cheddar or Double Gloucester or a ripe Stilton with a splash of vintage port ..that would give you something better to stick in the hole in the dyke
Since this is a family show I can only assume you are referring to "a nice gouty big-toe".

P.S. I have a bottle of Croft's 1945 here, but am afraid to open it for fear that it will be all crystalline by now. Though there are those who say "great anytime between now and 2200"...

Beg Pardon. Double post. These error messages are getting more and more common.

Hi Gavin, what kind of sausage skins you need? Natural sausage skins are available in meat counter's of grocery shop's by request, ask 'luonnonsuoli'. In Helsinki at least Stockman has them.

Oh and how is rye bread making going? Still making it yourself?

sausages

My friend Sylvia has her sausages made by the lady whose picture is on the front page of the Kaupunki bit of HS this morning. That's the Rein butcher in Hakeniemi. She made a ton of them for our Bonfire Party last November and everyone said how good they were, even the Finns. You could try asking her for a kilo of the English lady's sausages.... but you will have to order in advance. If there is a big enough demand I am sure they would make them on a regular basis...

I also get chipolatas and merguez (spicy Moroccan lamb sausages) from the Swedish butcher in the Vanha Kauppahalli on the harbour - they are pretty good.

And you can get skins from the butchers in Hakeniemi.

BANGERS!

I'm off to Stockholm for the first time in ages so will visit this shop and get myself some pork and apple or pork and sundried tomato with basil or pork and leek.......

Had some Kabanossi (sp?) that were leftover from Juhannus tonight so felt the urge for some course ground, meaty sausages.

Just need to find it on a map now.

Kabanossi is correct spelling, i like more "flour sausages" as sausages and meat as meat :)

You can do worse than some of the Bratwursts and similar from Lidl. Dulano I think is the brand. The smallish ones (about 10cm long) are quite sagey and remind me a little of Lincolnshire Pork.

Most of the Finnish style sausages contain MRM (mechanically recovered meat), a disgusting ingredient that is banned in McDonald's, banned by UK local authorities for use in school meals, and banned by the major UK supermarkets for use in their own label products. I feel sick every time I see parents buying these cheap sausages to feed to their kids :(

Us too and they sold like hot cakes. nam!

BBQs make me smile, especially when you take some decent stuff, beef and lamb ulkofilee, lamb cutlets, decent sausage, etc. whilst others turn up with the cheapest they can find (but then they eat all the decent stuff  ). Had the same problem in the UK, people would turn up with Asda Smart Price economy burgers (50 pence for 8  ), but then tuck into the tastier cuts.

Its true that producing mechanically recovered meat isnt something what childs should watch but it doenst make it bad because that way we get all out from necessary killing of animal and dont waste anything. Its safe to eat.

I'd rather not, if it's all the same. My original ammatti was food scientist and I have 15 years experience in the food industry, 12 of those were meat-related. Please be reassured onkko, that my opinion isn't based on a whim, or any emotion about animal slaughter. Spongiform encephalopathies (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is BSE) are capable of infecting other species than cow, including pigs and sheep. It's safer not to eat MRM, which can contain ground bone, and more worringly, can potentially contain bits of spinal cord. Putting those risks aside, MRM is a disgusting product, it contains gristle and sinew, and it stinks ;) Reasons why Finnish "sausages" and "lauantai makkara" are ground down so finely, and (in the case of sausages), fully cooked before being packed.

Well i know problems and as you said its safe and cheap :)
I know that if its done unproperly its unsafe like any other food is.
Of course its safer eat food what cant be affected on known deciases but who can afford it? I have eat korvasieni what is poisonous and pallokala what is really deadly if one mistake is done. Not to mention pigs, unsafe if undercooked.
So risk is relatively low and by so quite acceptable. Making of that meat i would like again borrow what my friend, who laughs about accident and beheading videos, said "its not something what childs should see" and in this case i really believe and dont want to. He cant eat anything made by mrm.
Your opinion isnt about safety but you have seen how its done. I firmly believe that we dont have to see reality behind food production like this if it doesnt include bad treatment on living animal.
Btw i have some lauantaimakkara in my refrig and i plan to buy new ;)

Karhunkoski, isn't it true that heat (cooking) does not destroy the prions that cause spongiform encephalopathies?

Onkko, maybe your signature should be something like: Making the best of the wurst.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
