That Dutton fellow is the same freelance journalist who wrote this infamous opinion piece which was published in the Telegraph right after the Jokela school shooting incident.

He also made his opinions very clear on the one that happened in Kauhajoki... this time getting them published in The Guardian.

I seem to recall he didn’t have much in the way of formal academic research credentials or publications at the time... so I’m left to wonder if this new book of his is now actual academic (peer-reviewed) anthropological research or just snarky commentary written by a random grumpy freelance writer who happens to live in Oulu, Finland... among the Laestadians and such. ;)

This is exactly why I rather tell some bright-eyed HBS case wanting to move to Oulu to not

I read the article and it might be a good idea to show this link here on a prominent place, so all the people who think it is paradise here and the 'lumeavioliito' folks might think twice  BTW Jukka is getting pretty radical :)

Your version would have been a great Bushism.

Dutton though shares my opinion of the 6 degrees and a few other things. Though I attribute much of his crankiness on Oulu

maybe this winter, you could shovel some snow... like drives, sidewalks.. send out some flyers.

It's bad everywheres. chances are you will be unemployed for several months before you will get an interview or get hired. My dad has been unemployed for about 1 1/2 years now, living in Central Florida where the unemployment is about 11.8 %. The most important thing is not to become a 'discourage worker', keep searching.... type 'job hunting tips in a recession' into google, read the articles. Plus timing is everything too, your chances of finding a job are greater before x-mas. Businesses put a 'freeze' on hiring after x-mas until like march or april. But keep in mind you will be sending out like close to 100 or more resumes/CVs before you get noticed.

I read the article, and it's a pile of utter rubbish, and huge tracts of it pi**ed me off. Firstly some it is incorrect and downright poorly researched. The "Slovenian" (they prefer Slovene by the way) geneticist was actually a psychiatrist with an interest in the genetics of suicide, his name was Andrej Marusic, died of cancer couple of years ago, and he was trying to explain the high suicide rate in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia (bit closest to Hungary) based on a theory of a so called 'J curve" going from the Baltics down to Hungary, taking in part of Slovenia, leaving out the Mediterranean part which has the lowest suicide rate in the country. I knew of him, knew him, and went to his lectures on the subject, and he was not pinpointing anything about Finns, he was interested in Slovenes (duhhhhhh).

Regarding not telling the name of the baby? Great idea, better then some cultures where the sex and name are known to all and sundry before the poor sprog has even left the uterus, and the idiot parents are even displaying 3D ultrasoud photos to the neighbours. A bit of decorum around the whole issue is badly needed and the Finns have it quite bloody right. Besides a bit of contemplation on the name of a child might prevent all the stupid names going around. If I hear Wayne one more time ................

Silence - sooooo sick of this old chestnut. Based on my observations, Finns talk amongst themselves more or less as much as anyone else. If they keep themselves to themselves on buses etc., so what? What is the big deal here, I never got it. Saying that people meet for coffee and say nothing, or little, well, I never experienced that, and it's nonsense and total exageration for a newspaper article. Makes good press. Bloke sounds like an idiot.
