Re: Where can I find bear meat?
Onkko, I come from a culture where hunting for sport is rare so I am not used to this concept as I support animal conservation. It is good that the bear population in Finland is stable or growing though.
Re: Where can I find bear meat?
In here we have about 350,000 hunters with 1,600,000 guns in 5,000,000 country and its mixed sport and food (expensive if you count it like 1200e/kg bird what my friend just counted) with quite good way to look that there is something to hunt in next year too so there is limits what you can hunt.bearsforlife wrote:Onkko, I come from a culture where hunting for sport is rare so I am not used to this concept as I support animal conservation. Hunting in here is refreshing walks around woods with possibility to get some food but since you can get that food from mall freezer its not so important.
We arent looking for extinction of any animal but keeping animal levels on balance so we can live together. If we hunt too much beasts other animals rise and if we kill too much other then beasts starve.
And for example moose hunt saves many lifes in roads and still keeps moose population good because there is limits like "hunting group X can shoot Y mooses".
And to make my point clear i never owned a gun (i dont count my BB gun) or hunting licence and i have never shot anything else than target or beer can.

Out of interest, do you support controlling your kangaroo numbers? I don't know much about the situation, beyond that a guy I know was invited to shoot one last time he was there. He didn't know a great deal about rifles, but from the empty cartridge case he brought back as a souvenir, I was shocked to see it was only .22 rimfire

Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

You can have a few of ours no problem. We can toss in a couple wolves and a lynx too.bearsforlife wrote:Bear populations are in serious decline worldwide

Seems to be powerful enough to kill people, why not kangaroos...onkko wrote:Goddammit, you can shoot squirrelrs with .22 not big animal like kangaroo.

There was a kid killed with an air rifle in the UK recently, are you suggesting large animals can be hunted with those too?

You're obviously trying to be clever, but let me re-phrase:Upphew wrote:Absolutely. http://www.quackenbushairguns.com/Karhunkoski wrote:There was a kid killed with an air rifle in the UK recently, are you suggesting large animals can be hunted with those too?Upphew wrote:Seems to be powerful enough to kill people, why not kangaroos...
Are you suggesting that large animals should be hunted with air rifles similar to that which recently killed a human in the UK? The Air rifle was a low-powered model (<12 ft/lbs, approx 16 joules), available without a firearms certificate.
Bottom line, .22 rimfire is not suitable for hunting kangeroos.

Re: Where can I find bear meat?
I'm not suggesting that large animals should be hunted with air rifles that can be bought for under 100€ from nearest Hongkong. I'm suggesting that one should be able to shoot game with air rifle, legally, in Finland. Now, afaik, the law says that air rifle is not a gun and thus cannot be used in hunting. No mentions about calibers or joules. 4,5mm or 12,7mm are both unusable for hunting in the eyes of law.Karhunkoski wrote:Are you suggesting that large animals should be hunted with air rifles similar to that which recently killed a human in the UK? After checking about kangaroos and regulations and some rimfires, I'd agree, with reservations, about using rimfire .22 to hunt kangaroos.

And with reservations, because if it is good enough to kill few people, it should be good enough for some marsupials too.Upphew wrote:I'd agree, with reservations, about using rimfire .22 to hunt kangaroos.Karhunkoski wrote:Bottom line, .22 rimfire is not suitable for hunting kangeroos.

The regulations don't allow it though....which makes me think. If you ignored them, why did you link then?

Well... I've never been to southern hemisphere, I've never hunted, I've never shot with hunting rifle... So basically I'm just a internet warrior with google and opinion.Karhunkoski wrote:The regulations don't allow it though....which makes me think. If you ignored them, why did you link then?
And if the regulations doesn't allow something, it doesn't mean that the regulations aren't at fault. Imnsho hunting with enough power should be legal, be it air rifle, pistol or crossbow. And I would like more leeway to that power thing. That kangaroo hunting regulation demanded something like 1500J, which i understand with something that weighs 80kg but why would you need such power if you are shooting 15kg one @ 25m (dunno if they let you so close, but I'm damn sure that they don't born as 2m and 80kg beasts)? Get closer, if you are using under powered cartridge.

Re: Where can I find bear meat?
I began hunting white-tail deer more than 43 years ago, and I have shot, skinned, gutted, dressed, and eaten many of them.Upphew wrote:...Imnsho hunting with enough power should be legal...
The little .22 rimfire can kill a 150+ kg deer, instantly, but only if shot at very close range, and only if hit in exactly the right place. The trouble is that it takes an expert hunter to do that, and the law about minimum ammunition power exists because few hunters have that level of skill, including their knowing to not shoot unless they know the bullet will go to exactly the right place, at very close range.
A good shot, however, will kill a deer instantly, and the deer will drop straight down, like a sack full of stones, dead before it hits the ground.
BTW, once a hunter has learned how to get that close to a deer, many hunters will no longer use a rifle, and will use a bow, instead.
I will not hunt in Finland, but I will go fishing.
