Interesting. Although I'm surprised at how few words I don't recognize from the Kotus sanalista, I've never seen ehta before -- not in Finnish, that is. So I'm wondering how you stumbled across a Finnish version of Swedish äkta. Maybe you got to it through German echt? Or is there something older and more proto-European than that, which only you philologists would know?Rob A. wrote: Maybe a better title for the John Wayne movie might have been..."Ehta sisu"....OK, OK...don't laugh....I'm just guessing...![]()
Probably it has some relation to a belt made from genuiinin nahkaAldenG wrote:Interesting. Oh well ...nothing particularly arcane.... I just dug around a bit in wiktionary and out popped the word, ehta....and I thought that has a nice short, blunt, "Finnic" feel to it ...a four-letter word that goes well with the four-letter word, sisu.... But it was just a guess....AldenG wrote:Interesting. Although I'm surprised at how few words I don't recognize from the Kotus sanalista, I've never seen ehta before -- not in Finnish, that is. I think the original title would have been better as simply "Grit." And damned if I can figure out whether the Finnish ought to be in partitive or not. I would have thought so, but I wouldn't have put a high confidence value on it.
The best English definition of a man with 'sisu' is 'not a sissy'CH wrote:The word they use in the video is sisu. It's a specific type of courage (and some other stuff), so you cannot say that it would be the "best translation" for courage, that would be the previously mentioned rohkeus.
