Translated hit songs... some "funny" examples

(this would not have been out of place in the Kielikoulu section but I'll post it here all the same)

It was all the rage, until... maybe mid-eighties, to make Finnish-language versions of foreign hit songs.

Here's one example - note how cleverly one small bit of the original lyrics has been left untranslated



This, on the other hand, goes on display to the chamber of horrors. It takes special talent to write such awful lyrics.



In the sixties of course, one just had to cover Beatles songs...

The translated ones were pretty popular back in the day.

That one I've always liked - there was some originality and local colour in the lyrics, whereas most other Beatles cover translations of the day were a bit wooden due to the fact that they were desperately trying to translate everything word for word "as in the original"

"Hän matkalippunsa saa - ja matkustaa"
"Eilinen - kaikki huoleni vei tyhjyyteen"
"jos käden annat vaa-a-a-a-ain"

And yes, they also have made cover verions later on - but not even nearly in the scale as it used to be. Whenever there was a "hit" it was very likely that some (or even several) of the local singers made their own version in Finnish.

The first LP I ever owned was the Finnhits 1 (blue one) - more than half of the songs were cover songs. There's Waterloo, Tie A Yellow Ribbon..., some Jacques Brel (Ne Me Quitte Pas), Killing Me Softly With His Song... and so forth... I was maybe six years old and had to get the album because of this song
