pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
Kirjoita 13 niin,että siinä on 4 ykköstä !
kirjoittaa = to write
niin,että = in such a way that
siinä on = in it there is/are
ykkönen = number 1

Hmmmm...at first I thought it was a trick question ... But the closest I could come was "1101", but there is still a "0" there. Then there is "XIII" , but four "1's"....I don't know , I can't think of any other numbering conventions..

Well, binary is about special knowledge rather than intelligence. But you didn't exhaust your options:Rob A. wrote: Hmmmm...at first I thought it was a trick question ... 1010 + 0011
or
1010
0011
These things usually turn on invalid assumptions, such as the idea that you can't use a + sign.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
Re: pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
....or simply 11 +1 +1...but that seems too obvious to be an "intelligence test"....

If you're allowed to rotate your ones:
Code: Select all

Re: pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
Now that definitely shows intelligence....thinking outside the box.... I thought Finns weren't allowed to do that... a cultural prohibition, so to speak....jahasjahas wrote:If you're allowed to rotate your ones:Code: Select all

Then again, it's more in the usual spirit of these riddles because anybody can do it.Rob A. wrote:....or simply 11 +1 +1...but that seems too obvious to be an "intelligence test"....
Funny I thought of the binary but not the ordinary.
I'm guessing you found the intended answer.

Re: pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
That was the correct answer. Congratulations !Rob A. wrote:....or simply 11 +1 +1...but that seems too obvious to be an "intelligence test"....

If you think that it was a little too easy here is something more difficult :Rob A. wrote:....or simply 11 +1 +1...but that seems too obvious to be an "intelligence test"....
Etsi luku, joka on 11 kertaa niin suuri kuin saman luvun numeroiden summa !
( Find a number that is 11 times as big as the sum of its digits ! )

Spoiler:kalmisto wrote:Etsi luku, joka on 11 kertaa niin suuri kuin saman luvun numeroiden summa !

10x+y = 11(x+y)
Now you take it home, solve it, plot it, see the only non-negative values of x and y, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you've got a stew going.

Well....I can't see it. I don't seem to have the kind of mind that looks for obvious solutions...I'm thinking about quadratic equations.....

Re: pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
That one wasn't too hard because there aren't that many numbers divisible by 11. Plus intuition tells you it has to be within a certain range because of how sums and products grow differently. And as you look at likely options there's a quick convergence toward the solution.Rob A. wrote:kalmisto wrote:If you think that it was a little too easy here is something more difficult :Rob A. wrote:....or simply 11 +1 +1...but that seems too obvious to be an "intelligence test"....

I'd say be less formal and try accessing the non-scientist within you.

Re: pieni älykkyystesti - a small intelligence test
I do begin to wonder, though, could there actually be more than one solution? Mine is the lowest possible solution.
On EDIT:
Wait, duh! Mine is the SECOND lowest possible solution.
Great little equation from jahasjahas, though. It didn't jump out at me that the problem was amenable to algebraic solution because I didn't consider splitting out the digits in that fashion.

I never knew algebra and equations could be so useful in a language school!

Still, you were missing a variable...jahasjahas wrote:I never knew algebra and equations could be so useful in a language school!
