No EU health insurance and travelling

Post by beherenow » Tue May 19, 2015 10:53 am

Hi guys, do anyone knows what are my options in current situation? I applied for KELA coverage two weeks ago - because of that I needed to give up my health insurance in my home country (EU) and of course to return my EU health insurance card. I'm travelling outside Finland tomorrow and I realized that I have no proof of health insurance here (I'm working here second month, I'm already registered and allowed to visit local health centers). I thought it's the same as in my prev country that I just pop up and ask for the temporary paper which is issued when someone didn't ask for EU HI card and needs to travel fast... unfortunately that's not the case as no decision from KELA is done yet :-/. So I tried to buy some private travel insurance - also, with no luck as for every kind there is a need of KELA approval, which I find weird, but ok that's the system here.
So... can anyone give me an advice what are my options now? What happens when some accident happens while I'm abroad? I guess I will pay it on my own, no problem with minor ones but what if something serious happens? Will I need to pay it fully? Or what can I do?
Thanks a lot for any advice :-)

Are you confusing EHIC and EU blue card?

The easy route is to buy travel insurance from international providers. Otherwise maybe it would be possible to retroactively route the invoice to Kela was the decision is in effect. If travel insurance form international provide the latter option probably isn't justified for the amount of work and risk involved.

EU Blue Card is a RP for HSMW - You are looking for EHIC - that covers not what you are looking for - you still require an insurance - Go to Kela website and apply for EHIC but do not expect it will come in days  Valid for two years - before expiry you will receive the new automatically.

Think positive that everything will be fine - mean you will not have an accident - or buy an insurance
I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse. I'm gonna grant him all my old underwears that fit his head helping his nose stays in place

Thank you :-) No, I didn't confuse EHIC and permit, I know the difference - wrongly I described EHIC as blue one - it's corrected now :D. Well, I went to LahiTapiola and it looks like they insured me - it's a bit strange because yesterday when I wanted to buy their travel insurance online, it didn't allow me as 'KELA card was necessary'... today while visiting personally, it suddenly wasn't necessary, although the insurance guy asked about it. I'm quite confused :D.
Why is all that private insurance related to KELA btw? I've already bought insurances in other countries and never asked me about what kind of other insurance do I have :-/
And that's a good point about retroactive asking from KELA, just in case - hopefully it will be possible :-). Oh it's such a pain being in a void! :D

When you are covered by Kela it reduces the costs of the insurance company since they can use the public health care system in Finland. Some healthcare functions are only provided by the public sector in Finland. This is taken into account in their pricing.
