UFC (or any MMA)

Post by ScubaGirl » Sun Sep 02, 2007 10:00 pm

Anybody here into Ultimate Fighting Championship or mixed martial arts in general? They used to show some Pride FC & K-1 events here on eurosport, but I haven't seen anything on there in ages. I get the monthly UFC events sent to me from a friend in the states, but since I'm the only person I know who is into this sport, I always end up watching it alone & having nobody to discuss this subject with. Is there an underground mma scene here in Finland that I'm unaware of? I think it'd be a lot more fun if I could watch these fights with other fans over some pizza & beer! Get a babysitter for my little girl and have a monthly UFC night!!!

Anyone up for this? Anyone even know what the hell I'm talking about? LOL

I watch it occasionally, Viasat Sport shows K1 occasionally, but UFC doesn't seem to be available here... unless you find it on internet. I used to watch UFC when Tank and Victor Belfour fought... since then not so actively...

Finnish Event coming up... http://www.fightfestival.com/
Get in there...

I used to be right into it (when I used to do Jiu Jitsu), but I only get about 1 DVD a year now... usually the best of type of DVDs, cause it's gotten a bit hyped/hollywood for my liking. I'm a fan of the fighting, but not all BS that seems to have come now that it's Americanised (I'm not being anti-American here... it was just better when it was more underground and the best fighters came from Brazil).

Wow, surprised to see a MMA related thread on this forum...

Speaking of, the husband and i are off to London on Friday for a romantic getaway - to watch UFC 75 on Saturday in the FLESH. I seriously CANNOT WAIT i bought 2 super cool tickets right behind the VIP ringside seats.

Truthfully, I dislike UFC, but at the moment, they are the top organisation with the most amount of watchable and talented fighters. I miss PRIDE very much and wish Dana White and the F*cktard brothers didn't dispose of it but what it boils down to is the fault of Dreamstage and their dealings with the Yakuza.

It's truly a turning point when it comes to MMA at the moment, a lot of the good fighters from PRIDE have scattered...majority went to UFC, but let's see if there will be a PRIDEsque 2 in the lines which will be a spring off from K1 (so it's been rumoured).

We actually have access to streams when UFC or other MMA events are on live...but we tend to save it for later (when it's a decent time to watch it here in Finland...most are live at 4am or 8 am).

Oh yeah i do train in a martial arts...but only one, muay thai.

boO_fi, I'm soooooooooooooo jealous of you! I sooooooo wanted to go to UFC 75, but my daughter is just too young to be left alone with someone other than myself (she'll only fall asleep to MY voice). This is the 3rd UFC event on this side of the pond this year already though, so I'm hopeful that there will be more to come and when she gets older, mommy can get away for a weekend :D.

OMG, you're gonna see Rampage vs Henderson LIVE!!!!!!!!!! You have no idea how jealous I am!!!!!!!!! :o . I'm a huge Quinton Jackson fan, even though his public image is a bit over the top and ridiculous. It's all in good fun though. Then again, I'd hate to see Dan lose to him. I'm not too thrilled over the other bouts on this card though. Hope Cro Cop does better in his second run in the octagon. I was so embarrassed for him when he lost to Gonzaga (sp?) by the same head kick that he himself is so famous for ending so many of his fights with.

I'm not sure why everyone is so anti-UFC these days. I've always preferred the octagon over a ring, but I always liked Pride fighters more than UFC fighters. Now that Dana has signed so many pride guys, I can finally see some of my fav fighters in a cage!!!!!! The ropes imo, just got in the way & disrupted some really intense moments because the ref has to stand them up or restart them in the middle of the ring. It loses some of the momentum. Just my imo. The only thing they need to do now is get rid of Mike Goldberg as a commentator and bring Bas over to replace him :D

So hey, if you wanna have UFC nights over some pizza & beer (starting with UFC 76, since you won't be here for 75 :P ) let me know!!!! I've tried desperately to get my friends here into mma, but I haven't been able to convert anyone.

well, one of the reasons why people don't like UFC is due to them making MMA mainstream in the US. there is of course no problems with this, it's technically better for the sport, but, you get a lot of idiots who jump aboard the bandwagon and act like arses when they watch MMA. Take for example, compare PRIDE fights in Japan (where ALL fighters, no matter if they're popular or a no name) to the UFC fights in the US. In EVERY UFC fight, you hear the fighters get booed. For what reason? Because there's too much groundgame? At least that's one of the reasons...little do they know that a big part of MMA IS BJJ, wrestling, etc - people need to start looking at how technical and beautiful these particular martial arts are. The US public should also respect the fighters.

My reasons as to why i liked PRIDE as to the UFC

In the PRIDE ring, head stomps were allowed. It'll be interesting to see how Wanderlei does in the UFC since that's his signature move - the head stomp, which he can't do anymore.

Pride's 1st round was 10 mins...truly shows the endurance/cardio of a fighter. UFC...5 mins.

Pride didn't have the 10 point mark system like they do in the UFC.

The fighters were paid decent wages unlike in the UFC where the management gets all the money.

Fighters are only allowed to fight in the UFC if they sign a contract. This is why Fedor hasn't signed with the UFC yet - he also competes in international sambo competitions and if he signed with the UFC, that means bye bye to his original roots.

Well, that's all that i can think of for now. But for sure i'm going to enjoy my first MMA event...my husband i'm sure will enjoy it too though his friends used to be in MMA here in Finland and he's watched a few finnfight events and such.

Here's my predictions for UFC 75

Quinton Jackson vs. Dan Henderson (though I like both fighters, Hendo has the advantage on the ground - though it'd be cool to actually hear hendo get slammed by rampage :D)
Matt Hamill vs. Michael Bisping
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović vs. Cheick Kongo
Houston Alexander vs. Alessio Sakara
Paul Taylor vs. Marcus Davis

Thiago Silva vs. Tomasz Drwal (not sure about this one really - could be close)
Naoyuki Kotani vs. Dennis Siver
Anthony Torres vs. Jess Liaudin
Gleison Tibau vs. Terry Etim

Forgot to reply to this, sure, where do u live?

I know what you mean about trying to get your friends into watching MMA - actually a few of our friends via this forum have poked fun at me and the husband and don't like to watch MMA when we make them watch it :) (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE MODERATOR MAN :P)

i guess to those who don't really know the sport, a bunch of half naked guys on the floor is pretty queer :P

I usually just put on some select clips (either "best of" stuff, or Sherdog clips)... once they've seen a few knockouts and the odd arm dislocation, they generally think it's pretty cool.

I don't mind mma being mainstream. I just wish it would be mainstream here so I could have someone to watch the fights with . It's like when a teenager stops listening to a band they love only because they got mainstream. Kinda silly.

I do agree with you on the booing, but it doesn't happen in every single fight. It only happens when the crowd feels like there isn't enough action, not only on the ground, but even when they're on their feet just feeling out the other fighter for several min with neither guy making a move. Having said that, I do not think it's the audience's call and they absolutely should have respect for these guys who've trained their butts off and just let the ref make the call on whether there's enough action. Did you see the Pride event they had in the states earlier this year (or was it end of last year? a side effect of motherhood is memory loss LOL). To my recollection, there was no booing at that event & the audience was full of americans :).

All mma orgs have slightly dif rules. Pride didn't allow elbows to the face, where UFC does, etc... I did find the first 10min round fascinating in Pride, but I really don't mind the 3 5min rounds they have in UFC non-title fights. As for money, I'm of the understanding that the name fighters are getting paid very well now in the UFC. You gotta remember that UFC didn't have the kind of money that Pride had because until very recently mma in America didn't have the large audience that it had in Japan. More fans equals more tickets & merchandise sold, equals more money for everyone.

Btw, I didn't know about the whole contract stipulation you mentioned. I was hoping Fedor would be coming to the UFC. I have a 10 month old daughter, so I don't have much time to read the mma news from sherdog or mma weekly like I used to. Just replying to this post has been a 24hr ordeal LOL (left the pc on all night on this page in between changing dipaers, feeding, playing, etc... )

I live in etu-töölö btw, so pm me whenever you wanna arrange a fight night :D

Have an awesome time at ufc 75 & post here about your experience!

You're right - it's good that MMA is becoming mainstream to an extent - I enjoy being able to talk about MMA with people who do their homework on different fighters and can appreciate the different organisations out there. BUT, in the US, MMA can become mainstream in the sense of being just like WWF or WCW or any of those bs wrestling organisations and you know what type of people these events attract. Those people aren't there to see how good of a striker or grappler a fighter is - they're simply there for bloodlust.

In regards to the PRIDE event in Vegas, the majority of the people attending the event, though american, were those are just like you and me - we know what MMA is about and appreciate the different organisations out there. Still even though it was nearly a year ago, MMA wasn't as mainstream as it was now - a lot of people didn't know about PRIDE in the US since UFC was the only organisation making the step outside of ppv. Thus, one of the reasons why you didn't hear booing - people respect and know about the fighters and went to finally see a PRIDE event in the US.

As for the fighter's salary...sure UFC, after coming under a lot of pressure, raised the salaries of the fighters. It's still lower than most of the well known fighters made in PRIDE though and it's not really about UFC becoming more mainstream that they can afford paying their fighters well - with the profits they get from ticket sales PLUS from PPV, advertising and sponsorship they did/do have the money to pay their fighters 4x what they did/do now.

Let's see how these organisations play out - just yesterday i read that Cuban (head of HDNET) wants to sign fedor, but he's a BSer usually. I'd really like to see some of the Japanese fighters like sakura, gomi etc fight sometime soon. I really hope the Japanese come up with an organisation that can rival UFC.

Btw, sorry I ignored the other posts in this thread. I got a bit carried away with excitement to see another female into this sport :). Thanx for that link mCowboy. If anyone else here wants to do a UFC night, let me know.

Have fun this weekend boO_fi!

I made a huge mistake. Put my daughter to sleep and I thought, "I'll watch one fight and go to sleep". LOL, Just watched the first 3 fights of UFC 75 and my adrenaline is pumping

I won't give any spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet, but hey boO_fi, there was booing in London too. Guess it' not just the american fans . I can't wait to hear about your experience there!

Allright, off to watch at least one more before bed!

Damn, the english audience is way more brutal than the americans. Booing a DEAF fighter during his entrance??? :(

SPOILER ALERT:

ABSOLUTE F*CKING BULLSH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Matt Hamil CLEARLY won ALL THREE ROUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You could MAYBE argue that Bisping had the 3rd round (though I don't think so), but there is NO WAY IN HELL he had those first 2 rounds. HELL NO!!!!!!!!! Now I gotta watch another fight. I couldn't go to sleep after Cro Cop lost for the 2nd time in the octagon and I certainly won't be able to sleep after this bullsh*t call (lol, I'm too passionate over this sport). Hamil should have never let Bisping get back on his feet during those first 2 rounds. He would've certainly been able to get a submission if he kept it on the ground. The judges were smokin some serious crack though cuz even on his feet he was clearly the better fighter. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Even Bisping himself was surprised that he won :x
