Theres usually a link somewhere that says 'English'.
Don't know how current the information of these is:
Lost & Found
A bar that is well mixed with straights and
gays, there are occasional events such as
Finnish bands or drag acts. In the
basement bar there is a small dance floor
that can sometimes offer promising music.
Not the most impressive place but it serves
its purpose.

Gay Bars and Clubs
DTM
This is the best-known gay club in Finland
and one of the biggest in the Nordic
countries. A popular party place boasting a
lighting and sound system unrivalled by
other Helsinki clubs. There are two dance
floors and a café. The café is opens at 9
everyday, Sundays at 12. Go here to enjoy
a drink or a coffee and do some light people
watching. The café is nicely decorated with
a wood effect linoleum wall and the
occasional missing floor tile. The lower
dance floor plays typical club music, pop
remix hits while the upstairs is for those
that enjoy hits from the 70s and 80s. On
Saturday nights the upper floor is women
only. The age limit is 18 before 21:00 and
20 after. Admission is free except on
Saturdays after 22:00.

Con Hombres
A video bar with endless hours of
EuroVision song contest videos. A slightly
older crowd goes this place.
Eerikinkatu 14

Hercules
Current dance remix hits as well as a few
disco tunes thrown in occasionally. While
you can often find some young people
mixed in here, the crowd tends to be
slightly older. Cover is usually free except
when there is a show. Age limit 24 on
Friday & Saturday, other nights 20. It’s
worth a look into at least once.

The Room
Most likely the best gay bar for people
watching, if you can find your way through
the endless cloud of cigarette smoke. Many
of the regulars so to speak around town
spend countless evenings here and are
willing to befriend the occasional passerby
that stops in for a drink. Take a friend and
enjoy the evening taking in all the sights,
no pun intended.

Mann's Street
Cheap drinks. Let’s leave it at that and if
you’re feeling adventurous, you can find out
what find out what kind of place this is.

Re: Finland freedom !
Hmmm Care to elaborate what you mean by 'free life' ? I'd say we're pretty conservative and abiding to rules (and we have many rules) more than say in Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands. But then again depends where you are from how we define 'conservative' in the first place.Bhim_Himar wrote:I heared about this caracteristic and freedom , and I want to know is it really Finland is the first country in free life ?

I think it is fair to say that Finland is a very direct/open society regarding this subject. Our president has been more that just a little active herself in promoting this open attitude. But it has attracted some critics...but generaly speaking critics are in the minority and tend to attract even more critic of themselves. But as Hank says there are rules/laws and lines over which you cannot step.
You always scare people about Finnish rules and seriousness. Well, it's not quite so. They're just people, but invest a lot in their outer image. That's why everybody believes Finns are supermen or something... I guess personal experiences speak louder than usual myths that are promoted even here. About gay people... I'm not one, but I've been to a club and it's something else, in a positive way, I say.

Well, you know. OK, Finns are very 'liberal' say you see topless sunbathers and little kids running naked on the beach. Then you come and think everything is free you get fined for smoking in the wrong place, your car gets towed and you are evicted because you were dusting your carpets on a wrong day.

I would agree with Hank's viewpoint that it depends on how you define "freedom", and as an expat myself I would say that Finland appears to be more tolerant and open-minded in some ways (not just in gay issues), but it is very strict, intolerant and conservative in other ways....so it is not better or worse than other countries- just different...
Also, I think that Helsinki residents are a bit spoiled- I don't mean that as an insult, but rather that Helsinki can be a rather sheltered environment where people aren't afraid to express themselves and be different, but in other parts of Finland (such as the city where I live) that is often not the case. I am not gay but I think it would be very difficult to have that kind of lifestyle in this area where I live or further up north. All I am saying is that Helsinki does not always represent the whole of Finland. There is this joke that Helsinki and Finland are 2 different countries The president is just good luck- in the next decade or so there could be a major conservative party taking over...who knows..."nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky..."
Also, a country can have as many laws as it wants guaranteeing freedom and equality, but the society can still find ways to prevent people from benefitting from those laws.
Former expat in Finland, now living in New Hampshire USA.

As said, we're a bit conservative... nothing much changed in 2 years probably Atleast Hercules and DTM are there in place, look through the links. And I'd be the last one to know of anything about the club scene in Helsinki, straight or gay
