JOBS in Network Operations Centres

Post by ravinmathoora » Fri Apr 09, 2010 11:02 am

Hi, my finnish partner and I have just moved to Finland - and it was hard enough getting a place to rent in Helsinki but we got something for 4 months. Now that the easy part is over....the hard part begins, looking for jobs. Does anyone know about whether the Telecoms companies like Elisa, Nokia, Sonera, Saunalahti, etc have Network Operations Centres/Service Desks in Finland or are they based abroad?

If in Finland, do these companies use monitoring tools like HP Openview, IBM Tivoli Netcool, Big Brother, Foglight, CA Unicentre, MRTG in the Network Operations Centre, or does each IT department have their own monitoring tools. The reason I ask is because I have been working with the industry for the last 10 years helping to integrate monitoring of I.T. services rather than individual I.T. systems, to help detect root cause quicker and also understand the impact of incidents.

Phil from Nokia - the guy the wrote the guide for foreigners,if you are out there, i would appreciate your advice on this topic.

Regards,
Ravin (born South African but now Irish and just moved to Finland :D )

Not Yet. I have enrolled into a 'finnish beginners' course that begins in 2 weeks.

Ravin,

The field you mention is rather small here in Finland by all accounts, and I think if you look for jobs in just that field you will be limiting your opportunities significantly. The market has been pretty much dead unless you're a coder for the last 18 months or so, however recently it has started to show signs of some improvement.

So only advice I can give is, broaden your search, look for coding jobs if you have experience in that area, then the only other thing I can suggest is network, network, network. Try to use any connections you can, your partners family/friends and so on as the majority of jobs going are not advertised.

Best of luck !

"Grunt jobs" are mostly outsourced to foreign places... like south africa  so the 3rd tier or "eyes only" stuff is in Finland, which is you need the lingo etc.
