Sir Tim Berners-Lee wins Finnish Millenium Prize (02/06/04)

Sir Tim Berners-Lee
The Finnish Technology Award Foundation has named Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, as the first recipient of the Millennium Technology Prize. The one-million euro Prize will be awarded biennially for "outstanding innovations that directly promote people's quality of life". Sir Tim was chosen unanimously from 78 innovators from 22 countries. The award ceremony will be the centrepiece of a high-profile four-day technology event in Helsinki 13-16 June. He will be joined by other British experts, including Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn-Smith (UKAEA Culham), who will be the keynote speaker at the Conference, Professor Robin Smith (UMIST) and Tim Sebastian (BBC).

Matthew Kirk, British Ambassador to Finland, said "I am very proud that the first ever Millennium Technology Prize is to be awarded to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the British inventor of the World Wide Web. The United Kingdom and Finland are at the forefront of innovation and technology: how fitting, then, that the Finnish Technology Award Foundation should today recognise the work of a remarkable British innovator. I greatly look forward to Sir Tim's visit here later this month".
