No I am intended you start learning Swedish.
"Reasonable conversation" can start with two parties on equal standing, the Italians just wanted you guys to come clean the floors in Trieste like back in the good old days, so thats why you were allowed into the EU.

Nage, it's of course hard to say on anyone else's behalf how long exactly it will take to learn the language "well enough" (whatever that means) but you'll be relatively ok when you'll get the hang of these sites in Finnish...
http://www.ammattinetti.fi and http://www.mol.fi
... then, you'll only have the natives to "compete" for the available jobs for... on top of that, not all jobs are announced at MOL, it's also a question of networking and "whom you know", what contacts and skills you have and so on... well surely you do have some challenge
but as said I do not wish to say "it is impossible". So what can I say, good luck and keep up those Finnish studies...? It's not exactly easy to provide any "reasonable" advice with a five-year perspective with, pardon me for saying so, so much speculation involved.... I'm especially referring to the old "I can do something else in the meantime while I perfect the language" tar pit... what would you think yourself, what will this "something else" involve? Something "outside" your actual profession?

This thread's between-the-lines purpose was "let's hypothetically say that I will learn the language - what about everything else?"
For example: the shrink business in USA is a win, in my country we do not have those American shrinks. Here people who graduate from let's say microbiology don't have a bright future, so they move to UK where they are more wanted and far better paid, with astronomy they go to USA. So I was wondering what is the situation in Finland with my education. For example; in high school we have only one year of philosophy, maybe in Finland you have 2 or more, here we also have a great lack of French professors etc. etc.... You go to any Balkan country with social education you can go straight digging holes with a shovel... Regarding that whole northern part of Europe is more advanced, I was assuming that you can get better jobs with social studies education. Or I can just join this guild: http://www.philosophersguild.com/
About my "meantime" sentence: I can do just about anything, I'm not so picky, I've already been doing all kind of jobs, for last two years I am working in an international SOS call center for technical and medical help, we are also partners with Falck in Finland, maybe I can go there in a Balkan department, or with some language skills work even for Finnish region. Or I can go arrange shelves in a store, I don't really care, as long as I have a higher goal that is waiting for me.

Re: Is there a need for my profession?
Ah, ok. I wouldn't start to guess about the general employment rate of aspiring philosophy teachers in Finnish schools - actually I did philosophy myself at the uni as a minor, but never ventured to the old teaching profession. THIS might give you some further food for thought - http://www.feto.fi/ and http://filosofia.fi/ - as for teaching in general, in case you missed it, Pursuivant already poked you towards the OAJ site http://www.oaj.fi/
Edit: this might interest you too http://www.netn.fi/ - you could subscribe to the quarterly mag maybe
As for the "anything" bit, I know what you mean but... in most such cases it's the dragon's lair -> http://www.mol.fi

Grazie danke, do you get television or watch it often? Despite the conflict history, Italy last hosted Eurovision in 1991.Nage wrote:How come you even know what Italy is, regarding that they don't appear on Eurovision?

Sorry, while reading your posts I got the impression that you were born after that year.Pursuivant wrote:Grazie danke, do you get television or watch it often? Re: Is there a need for my profession?
damn, Nage, I admire the great patience of yours towards that angry pimply teenager with his limited English
btw: you can teach philosophy in English and it's not always necessary to have a teacher's degree. Good luck!

Not that yours would be the perfect example.Nage wrote:And "I am intended" you learn some basic English grammar, my dear friend.
And the "gay" remark - call me discriminating, but with mindsets like yours, freedom of movement does more damage than good.
Free your mind and the rest will follow!

But to do it in Finland and get paid for it... good luck.freelistener wrote:btw: you can teach philosophy in English and it's not always necessary to have a teacher's degree. Good luck!
